At 2:49 p.m. EDT on Sunday, the National Weather Service released a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 3:15 p.m. EDT for Alger and Marquette counties.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the NWS Newport/Morehead City NC on Sunday at 3:40 p.m. in effect until 4:30 p.m. The warning is for Beaufort, Craven, Duplin, Greene, Jones, Lenoir and Pitt counties.
For the remainder of today, we will be on the storm watch. There is a chance for severe storms until roughly 9pm, especially south of Chicago. If we have a severe storm, all threats are possible including torrential rain, tornadoes, and damaging wind.
The delays at the Northern Virginia airports came as WUSA9 meteorologists reported a Weather Impact Alert for the DMV through 8 p.m.

Although tornado season is starting to die down just a bit, Mother Nature remains unforgiving this summer. Since there's a dangerous heat advisory in effect for several states, it's only natural that a few areas will get bombarded with thunderstorms.
