It was already hard to imagine a breakthrough emerging from the direct talks between Russia and Ukraine set to be renewed in Istanbul on Monday.

Ukraine questions Russia's commitment to peace after Moscow failed to send its negotiation proposals to Kyiv before the meeting.

Russian FM Lavrov and US Sec. Rubio spoke about June 2 peace talks in Istanbul. Rubio backed direct talks for lasting peace and offered condolences for the deadly bridge blasts in Russia. Both pledged to continue dialogue and work toward ending the Ukraine conflict.

By making harsh, uncompromising demands in peace talks with Ukraine while continuing to pummel it with waves of missiles and drones, Russian President Vladimir Putin is sending a clear message: He will only accept a settlement on his terms and will keep fighting until they’re met.

Kyiv said it was committed to the search for peace, but that it was waiting for a memorandum from the Russian side setting out their proposals.
