The sinkhole suddenly opened at an intersection in the Japanese city of Yashio. A second sinkhole nearby is hampering rescue efforts.

Another sinkhole has since opened up nearby, and residents within a 650-foot radius had been evacuated, a spokesman said.

Searchers say the fisherman fell while fishing on the Feather River southeast of Quincy and was swept under the ice.
