Police in an Atlanta suburb say say a bulletproof vest saved a SWAT officer's life just before he returned fire and killed a fleeing man.

A man who was killed after shooting a SWAT officer twice at a Roswell home has been identified, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Officers were serving an arrest warrant at a home along the 500 block of Ansley Drive around noon Friday.

The officer who was shot returned fire, shooting and killing the suspect, whose identity has not been released, according to police.

According to authorities, the incident occurred as the Roswell Police Department, along with a joint SWAT team, was executing a search warrant at home around noon Friday. Officers were attempting to contact the residents when a suspect, identified as Matthew Robert Taylor, 40, ran out of the back of the house and fired two shots.

A Roswell SWAT officer was struck in the chest during a shootout but is expected to recover, thanks to his ballistic vest. The suspect, wanted for multiple charges stemming from a December 31 incident,

Upon arrival, Roswell Detectives identified the male suspect from a criminal investigation on a December 31 incident where a male suspect fired a handgun when asked to leave a party.

Police say the suspect was being arrested for firing his gun in the air after being asked to leave a New Year's Eve party.
