The New York Rangers has a rough night on Tuesday. Not only did the team fall further back in the Metropolitan Division standings with a 4-0 loss to the Hurricanes at home, but they also helped validate every part of the blockbuster Mikko Rantanen trade.
The Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche (and Chicago Blackhawks too) pulled off a blockbuster trade on Friday night, as Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall were sent to Carolina and Martin Necas and Jack Drury wound up with Colorado.

The loss dropped the Rangers to 8-3-3 in January and followed a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday at MSG, when the visitors scored the winner with 15 seconds to play in regulation.
The Rangers fell to 24-22-4 (52 points) and failed to gain ground in their chase for a playoff berth. They remained three points behind Tampa Bay for the final wild-card spot.
