The death of a 1-year-old girl found unconscious in her family’s apartment in Queens was not the result of a dog mauling, the city’s medical examiner ruled, as the mysterious circumstances of her death are now being investigated.

The death of an infant girl in Queens was not caused by a dog mauling as originally believed, sources tell CBS News New York. Police officers were called to a Long Island City apartment early Tuesday morning for reports of a German Shepherd-pit bull mix puppy mauling a 1-month-old child.

An initial autopsy was inconclusive with further testing needed but did reveal the dog bites were inflicted after the girl was already dead.
