South Korean President Lee Jae-myung departed for Canada on Monday to attend the Group of Seven summit, his first overseas engagement since taking office earlier this month.

Also looming over the meeting are President Trump's inflammatory threats to make Canada the 51st state and take over Greenland.

Trump's relationship with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will be in the spotlight at the G7, after past conflict with his predecessor, Justin Trudeau.

The last time Canada hosted the meeting, US President Donald Trump torpedoed the gathering, calling his host 'dishonest & weak.'

The Prime Minister said targeting Moscow with further action would 'undoubtedly' form part of talks at the international summit this week unless the Kremlin engages in peace talks.

India is also a leading member of BRICS -- a bloc of leading emerging economies that includes Russia and China. BRICS has growing economic clout and is increasingly seen as a G7 rival.

Demonstrators gathered in front of city hall on Sunday to bring attention to a number of concerns. The G7 summit in Kananaskis runs June 15-17.
