The heavily armed man who tried to burst into a Sunday morning service at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne but was thwarted by parishioners who shot him dead was identified by police as 31-year-old Brian Browning of Romulus.

Congregants were gathered Sunday for a special vacation Bible school service at CrossPointe Community Church when the shooting happened. A security guard killed gunman.

Police say a man who opened fire outside a Michigan church filled with worshippers before he was struck by a vehicle and then fatally shot by security staff had attended services there a couple of times in the last year and his mother was a member.
