U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed efforts on Monday by lawmakers to advance a measure to check President Donald Trump's use of military force against Iran, after Tehran said it carried out a missile attack on the Al Udeid U.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Tuesday asserted that the War Powers Act is unconstitutional, pushing back forcefully against the lawmakers in both parties who are invoking the law in an effort to block President Trump from further military action in Iran.

The top House Republican said that the decades-old federal law restricting the White House’s ability to commit troops runs afoul of executive branch powers under the Constitution.
