The attorneys general of New York, California, Massachusetts and New Jersey asked the FDA to lift some requirements on mifepristone given its “25-year safety record.”

Four states petitioned the Food and Drug Administration on Thursday to lift its lingering restrictions on abortion pills.

The states consider it a move to force the F.D.A. to review and acknowledge extensive research showing the pill’s safety.
