Mayor Bass extends curfew in Los Angeles as anti-ICE demonstrations intensify, with initially peaceful protests evolving into confrontations requiring law enforcement intervention.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said President Donald Trump is “pulling a military dragnet” across Los Angeles during a brief public address on Tuesday.

Mayor Karen Bass announced a curfew for downtown Los Angeles as anti-ICE protests continued on Tuesday. The curfew will begin at 8 p.m. tonight, last until 6 a.m. on Wednesday, and apply to one square mile of downtown L.

Police detained more than 20 people, mostly on curfew violations, on the first night of restrictions in downtown Los Angeles and used crowd-control projectiles to break up hundreds of protesters.

Downtown Los Angeles fell silent Tuesday night as a mandatory curfew took effect, marking a turn in the city’s response to five consecutive days of escalating unrest.

The city recommends carrying proof of residence or employment for anyone planning to enter or depart the curfew area after 8 p.m.

President Trump has said the city would be burning without military intervention, but the protests have been confined to a relatively small area.

“Multiple groups continue to congregate on 1st St between Spring and Alameda. Those groups are being addressed and mass arrests are being initiated. Curfew is in effect,” read a post on the LAPD’s social media, sent at 9:09p.m local time on Tuesday night.
