Rep. Debbie Mayfield filed a lawsuit Thursday over state election officials blocking her from running in a special election to fill a Senate seat.

State Rep. Debbie Mayfield has asked the Florida Supreme Court to intervene after the Florida Department of State disqualified her in a Special Election in Senate District 19. The Melbourne Republican stressed urgency in a court petition, as a Republican Primary will be held on April 1.

Brevard County Republican Rep. Debbie Mayfield wants the state’s highest court to force the Florida Department of State to include her on the ballot for the special election for the state Senate seat she held for eight years.

The winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat Vance Ahrens in a June 10 special general election for the seat.

The Brevard Republican announced in November that she would run in a Special Election for her old seat in Senate District 19, shortly after Sen. Randy Fine announced he would resign to run for Congress.
