A judge has released a Palestinian student activist who led protests against the war in Gaza as a student at Columbia University and was arrested by immigration officials during an interview about finalizing his U.

Mohsen Mahdawi was detained as part of a crackdown by the Trump administration on international students. A federal judge ordered him released Wednesday.

U.S. District Court Judge Geoffrey Crawford ruled Mahdawi did not present a risk of fleeing from court proceedings or harming the community, Vermont Public reported. Crawford's order allows Mahdawi to return to his home in Vermont and continue attending classes at Columbia.
