Israeli occupation forces have launched a chain of air strikes on the southern Syrian city of Suwayda, hours after the Syrian government declared a truce in the region. The strikes mark an escalation in the unstable area, which has been rapt by fatal fighting between Bedouin tribes and local Druze troops since Sunday.

Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra announced on Tuesday a full ceasefire in the predominantly Druze city of As-Suwayda, following an agreement with the city’s elders and dignitaries. The truce comes after fierce morning clashes as Syrian forces entered the city and is part of a broader plan to stabilize the area.

The ceasefire followed deadly clashes between the Druze of Suwayda and Bedouin tribes that left over 100 people dead.
